Sources and citations

AcreScope helps farmers, agronomists, and field teams see and share locust activity quickly. It combines real-time community observations with environmental data to estimate where desert-locust risk is building. This page documents the data and science behind it.

Data and processing

AcreScope's predictive model uses environmental data from:

  • NASA GPM IMERGPrecipitation
  • NASA GLDAS NOAHSoil moisture
  • NASA MODIS MOD13Q1Vegetation (NDVI)
  • NASA MODIS MOD11A1Land surface temperature
  • ECMWF ERA5-Land HourlyWind speed and direction

Locust observations

Locust observation data is sourced from the FAO Desert Locust RAMSES database, accessed via the FAO Locust Hub. This data is the result of field surveys and control operations on desert locust conducted by the FAO member countries.

We wish to express our gratitude to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), its three Desert Locust Regional Commissions (CLCPRO, CRC, and SWAC), and the member countries for the shared data.

Satellite processing

Satellite features were processed using Google Earth Engine (Gorelick, N., Hancher, M., Dixon, M., Ilyushchenko, S., Thau, D., and Moore, R., 2017. Remote Sensing of Environment, 202, 18–27). Wind fields are derived from the ECMWF ERA5-Land Hourly dataset (ECMWF/ERA5_LAND/HOURLY) accessed through Earth Engine.
